E.H. Bitzer Muscatine American Legion Post 27 participates in many projects and programs of benefit to the local community. Some of these include donations to The Salvation Army, MCSA, Shop with a Cop, Toys for Tots, Pearl City Outreach, Bags of Blessings, various children’s clothing programs and our troops in the active military. These donations are of money, food, various useful items, and our time. We provide free of charge walkers, wheel chairs, canes and like items (as available) to veterans and their families in our community.

Our volunteers, annually replace all (~3,000) stick flags on the veterans’ graves in the three city cemeteries. Our Post hosts community celebrations of Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and we decorate the downtown streets with US Flags on patriotic holidays.

Each year, around Flag Day, we conduct Flag Retirement ceremonies to help residents properly dispose of unserviceable flags. Our members visit local schools and conduct classes in proper flag etiquette.

Our Post was also a greeting and hosting spot for a recent RAGBRAI visit to Muscatine. This included providing a rally spot for the U.S. Airforce bicycle team.

Arranged through the local funeral homes, members of our post, in association with the local VFW Post provide a combined Honor Guard unit to honor all Muscatine County deceased veterans at their last rites (upon request), whether they are members or not.  In the same way, we open our Hall for Celebration of Life gatherings for any local citizen or family.
