Founded in 1919, The American Legion Auxiliary has nearly 1 million members from all walks of life. The Auxiliary administers hundreds of volunteer programs, gives tens of thousands of hours to its communities and to veterans, and raises millions of dollars to support its own programs, as well as other worthwhile charities familiar to Americans. It is all accomplished with volunteers.

While originally organized to assist The American Legion, the Auxiliary has achieved its own unique identity while working side-by-side with the veterans who belong to The American Legion. Like the Legion, the Auxiliary’s interests have broadened to encompass the entire community.  Please visit the National American Legion Auxiliary website https://www.alaforveterans.org and the Department of Iowa site at http://iowaala.org for more detailed information about the Auxiliary and its purpose across the state and nation.

Edward H. Bitzer American Legion Auxiliary Unit 27

In May 1920, a movement began to form a woman’s Auxiliary of the Edward H. Bitzer American Legion Post in Muscatine. By the end of the month, fifty women had been enrolled, signing a petition to apply for a charter. Muscatine Auxiliary Unit 27 was officially chartered in 1922, and is currently comprised of 175 paid members. Scheduled meetings are conducted on the 1st Thursday of each month excluding December. In addition to organizing and hosting Auxiliary sponsored events, such as our annual two-day poppy drive, our unit also assists and participates in a number of other programs and activities intended to benefit Post 27, the Auxiliary, the Muscatine community and veterans as a whole.
